Our Camp

Mobile Migration Camp

OUR CAMP

Welcome to Great Migration Camps, where the ordinary becomes extraordinary. We don’t just provide safari accommodation; we provide a transformative experience that immerses you in the heart of Africa. Our purpose-built, passion-infused camps allow you to connect with nature in an authentic way. We specialize in following the wildebeest herds in our small, very mobile camp, ensuring you don’t leave the migration to chance. We can assist you from arrival in Tanzania to departure, offering accommodation, flights, and comprehensive travel services within the country.

Our primary goal is to get you as close as possible to the Great Migration. The camps are meticulously designed to allow guests to stay longer in national parks. At Great Migration Camps, you’re not just a visitor; you’re part of the ecosystem. Accommodating a maximum of six guests per camp unit, GMC offers an intimate and exclusive experience like no other. We encourage you to spend as long as possible in the natural spaces we call home.

With over two decades of pioneering tourism in Tanzania, no one understands the essence of East Africa like us. Our team embodies this expertise, and our extensive local network ensures unparalleled insight into the region. We are committed to ethical practices, and conservation is woven into every journey we plan and execute. From accommodation to transport, activities, and events, we excel in providing you with a unique camp experience.

The Ultimate Safari Experience

UNIQUE CAMP EXPERIENCE

Great Migration Camps offers an intimate and exclusive camping experience like no other.  We operate in an unfenced ecosystem, so wildlife moves freely though the space, and animals can pass through camp.  Like the wildebeest, we have to stay in tune with the natural environment. We are always alert and aware of our surroundings – listening for alarm calls and observing the behavioural patterns of our neighbours – the wildlife.  On arrival at camp, you will be receive a safety briefing from our experienced camp crew to ensure you are well taken care of in the wild.  Following a few simple guidelines will keep you perfectly safe throughout your stay, so remember to listen to your safari guide.

It is a privilege to drink hot coffee surrounded by giraffe and gazelles, and have elephant passing by, whilst having a sundowner. It is a gift to have lions patrolling at night, contact calling to avoid conflict and a delight to hear the raw  “rasping” of a leopard call . Respect your surroundings.

CAMP SIZE

Our camps consist of small very-mobile camp units, accommodating six guests per camp in three tents.  Each camp is little, and can be hired for exclusive use.  Despite their little size, the camps can be combined to double or triple group numbers. This modular expansion give us the capability to host up to 24 people.

Each camp is a state-of-the-art all-terrain mobile trailer unit, quipped with a mobile bush kitchen, mess tent, accommodation tents, and specialised camping gear. We provide everything you need and nothing you don’t, offering maximum flexibility and adaptability. Enjoy exclusive camp use in prime secluded areas, away from the crowds.  The intimacy of the little camp gets you closely in touch with nature.

CAMP LOCATIONS

These small-scale camps offer an intimate bush experience and allow us access to prime locations and campsites that are too small for big operations or less-mobile sustainable camps. With the flexibility to set up camp almost anywhere, we use special campsites in remote locations within protected areas, providing us the flexibility to be where the action is taking place. We can arrange flights to the nearest airstrip or provide road transport with coordinates. Our excellent relationships with airlines allow us to change the airstrip, even at the last minute.

  • GMC Migration-Camp is always as close to the migrating herds as possible for the best sightings. Typically located in the Northern Serengeti during the crossing season and near Ndutu on the southern plains during the calving season, this camp is very mobile throughout the rest of the year.
  • GMC Serengeti-Camp is usually close to the central Serengeti and serves as a good “base” for access to the Migration Camp. Our Serengeti camp is great for combining an overnight stay or two en route to the Migration Camp.
  • GMC Northern-Circuit-Camp moves between campsites and national parks in Tanzania’s Northern Safari Circuit. It is not limited to one park and has been spotted in Tarangire NP, Mkomazi NP, and West Kilimanjaro.
  • GMC Explorer Camp is ideal for any remote location and is great for private guides, exclusive group hire, multi-day events, and Tanzania’s southern safari travel circuit.

ACCOMMODATION

Our canvas dome tents are equipped to provide maximum comfort while keeping you close to nature. Inside, you’ll find a firm memory foam mattress and pillow to ensure a restful sleep. The tents also come with spacious and warm sleeping bags, which can be fully zipped or used as a lining only. Each guest receives a Maasai shuka (blanket) for use in camp.  These can be taken along on game drives for the morning chill or wind factor!   Tent configurations include single, double/twin, and triple setups.  Stretchers and camp cots are available upon request.  Bath and hand towels are provided, and a solar light is provided for your convenience.

Each tent features awnings over the door and a mat in front of the entrance. We recommend taking your shoes off before entering and bringing them inside with you at night.  Always remember to close your tent behind you and never sleep with an open tent. During certain weather conditions, condensation may occur inside the tent, causing some moisture droplets if it is warmer inside the tent than outside.  A jug of hot water is brought to your tent each morning for washing your face, feel free to make use of the washbasin and hand towel provided.

The Great Migration Camp Culinary Experience

gmc camp - culinary - mess tent

At Great Migration Camps, we believe that exceptional food enhances the safari experience, making your stay not just memorable but deliciously unforgettable. Our culinary team, led by the talented Alex and his team, crafts delectable meals using the sous vide method, ensuring each our protein dishes are perfectly cooked, tender, and flavourful. This technique involves vacuum-sealing the food and cooking it to precise temperatures, which locks in moisture and nutrients, resulting in consistently high-quality and safe meals. This has allowed us to increase the variety of our menu:   Proteins on offer:  Lamb Shank, BBQ Pork Ribs, Roast – beef, pork and lamb; chicken or lamb Curry, chicken wings, red snapper filet and calamari.

WATER & BEVERAGES

Stay hydrated with our unlimited supply of clean, filtered drinking water through the LIFESAVER WATER FILTER. Guests are encouraged to refill their own water bottles or purchase an eco-friendly glass bottle to minimise plastic waste. Our 24-hour coffee station offers self-service Tanzanian coffee prepared in a French Press, various teas, and hot chocolate, ensuring you are never without a comforting drink.

For those who enjoy a drink, our Honesty Bar provides a variety of beverages, sodas, and spirits. Guests can help themselves and settle their tabs upon departure. This setup allows you to enjoy your favourite drinks at your convenience, enhancing the relaxed and intimate atmosphere of our camps.

MEALS

Each day starts with a quick, early breakfast to fuel your morning adventures, followed by a lunch box designed for game viewing, packed with a variety of tasty and nutritious options. Our dinners are a true highlight, offering a three-course experience that includes a soup starter, a main course featuring sous vide meat portions paired with starch, vegetables, and a fresh salad, and a delightful dessert to finish. This allows our chefs to focus on creating balanced and exquisite meals, despite being in the heart of the wilderness.

At Great Migration Camps, we prioritize not only the quality of our food and beverages but also the sustainability of our practices, ensuring a minimal environmental footprint while delivering an outstanding culinary experience in the heart of the Serengeti.

SHOWER FACILITIES

The Great Migration Camps shower experience, is outdoors, and widely spoken about as the best shower in the bush. The spacious shower cubicles are open air, allowing you to shower under the stars and the Serengeti skies.  Each cubicle includes a mirror, shelf, and hooks for hanging your towel (provided) or clothes. To stay eco-friendly, we do not provide small plastic amenities, so please bring your own toiletries.  Water is heated on the camp fire every evening, blended to a suitable temperature and the “bucket” shower is filled and lifted for your convenience (and height)  There is one lever for switching the water on and off.

We encourage all guests to use water-saving techniques to conserve this precious resource. Each guest receives 20 liters of water per person.

  • Turn on the water to get wet.
  • Turn it off while you wash and lather.
  • Turn it back on to rinse.

TOILET

Our toilets are biochemical and located in private cubicles separate from the tents. They are manually flushed using a small pump action.  They are odour-free, providing a clean and pleasant experience. We also provide a hand-wash station with a water jug, wash basin, and dispensable hand soap.

We understand that using the bathroom at night can be a concern for many guests. Rest assured, it is safe to use the toilet at night, though we do recommend using it before you go to bed. If you do need to go, always listen for noises and look around to ensure your safety.

For nighttime toileting, we suggest:

  • For number 1, look around first and then pee close to your tent.
  • If you need to walk to the toilet at night, listen carefully, look around, and walk slowly and calmly.

LONG STAY

When our camp is set up for an extended stay in an area, we offer additional comforts such  as a gravity-fed flushing toilet, just like at home.  The same gravity fed system, allows for eco-flow low-pressure gas water-heated showers that provide hot water on demand.

Camp Facilities at Great Migration Camps

Camp Hospitality

Each Great Migration Camp has been designed to make your camping experience comfortable and enjoyable, while maintaining the close connection to the natural surroundings.

MESS TENT

The mess tent is the heart of each camp, where all meals are served and safari living happens. It is a communal space that offers shelter from the sun, wind, and rain.   On hot days, we open up the front, back, and sides of the mess tent to allow a refreshing breeze.  On cooler days, we close the sides up to create a warm and cozy environment.  Mesh sides, can be dropped to keep insects out, whilst allowing an open flow of air to keep things cool.

This versatile space is linked to the service side of the trailer.  Plates, bowls, crockery, cutlery, and glasses are easily accessible from within the mess tent, which also houses an honesty bar and a fridge stocked with cold drinks.  There is a dining table and chairs and a serving table for breakfast, lunch and dinner service.  We do family-style service, so help yourself to the food quantities you need when meals are served.  We aim to avoid food waste.

We’ve taken the dark side out of camping, with LED lights.  Lights attract bugs, and nothing can spoil a good camping trip like insects.  The orange LED lights lower the bug attraction and dim switches reduce light intensity to minimise the bug interaction

COFFEE & TEA STATION

Tea and Coffee is available at the mess tent 24 hours a day. Stanley Flasks are always filled with hot water so you can help yourself to the best Tanzanian coffee and a selection of teas or hot chocolate at any time of day or night.

WATER STATION

The Life Saver Jerry-Can Water Filter is easy to use – fill, pump, drink. This robust jerry-can solves our environmental plastic water bottle issues,  providing safe drinking water for staff and guests.

This portable water purifier is capable of filtering & purifying 20,000 litres/5,300 US gallons of clean drinking water, removing viruses, bacteria, cysts and parasites instantly.

Removes:

  • Virus – 99.99%
  • Bacteria – 99.9999%
  • Cysts – 99.9%

The LifeSaver Jerrycan holds up to 18.5 litres of water at any one time and supports those of us with a greater demand for clean water when adventuring overland and living off-grid.

LAUNDRY SERVICES

A limited laundry service is available.  All laundry in camp is hand washed, so if possible please limit to essential items.  Please note that we do not wash undergarments.

LEISURE ACTIVITIES

For those moments of relaxation, we provide birding books, binoculars, playing cards and a set of boules (petanque). Feel free to bring your own equipment, games and books to share or use with fellow guests.

At our camp, we strive to create a comfortable and engaging environment where you can enjoy the best of safari living. Whether you’re savouring a meal in the mess tent, charging your devices with solar power, or enjoying a game of boules, we ensure your stay is memorable and enjoyable.
