Frequently Asked Questions

Planning your safari in Tanzania or East Africa can be complicated as there is a lot of information widely available but navigating how best to experience this magnificent, large and diverse country based on your interests, time, budget and style is part of your safari journey. Questions arise of where to go, when to go, how long to go for, what to do & where to stay and how much it will cost.

TRAVEL BASICS

International flights typically arrive at:

  • Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO): Ideal for northern safaris like Serengeti and Ngorongoro.
  • Julius Nyerere International Airport (DAR): Best for southern Tanzania or Zanzibar.
Regional flights can connect you to destinations within the country.

Your choice depends on your itinerary. JRO serves northern parks, while DAR is suitable for Zanzibar or southern safaris.

Yes, most travelers need a visa. You can apply online for an e-visa here or obtain one on arrival. Check visa requirements for your nationality.

If you’re traveling from a Yellow Fever-endemic country, a Yellow Fever vaccination is required, and proof may be requested. Consult your doctor about recommended vaccinations, such as Hepatitis A, Typhoid, and Tetanus.

Tanzania is a malaria-prone area. There is no risk of malaria above 1,800m, although bite avoidance is recommended. There is a risk of malaria in all areas of Tanzania below 1,800m (including Zanzibar). Consult your doctor about prophylactic medication, and take necessary precautions.

GETTING AROUND

  • Flying Safaris: Perfect for covering vast distances quickly. Regional flights link key parks and destinations.
  • Driving Safaris: Ideal for experiencing the countryside and making stops at cultural or scenic spots.
  • Combination: Drive one way and fly back for the best of both worlds—scenery and convenience.

Yes, walking safaris are possible in certain areas.  They require a special permit and an additional fee. These safaris are guided and focus on safety.

We use custom-built 4×4 vehicles with open roofs for panoramic viewing. They are equipped for off-road adventures and ensure comfort.

WHEN TO GO & HOW LONG TO STAY

The ideal time depends on your interests:

  • July–September: Mara River crossings during the Great Migration.
  • January–March: Calving season in the southern Serengeti with lush green landscapes and predator activity.
  • November–March: Green season for birding and fewer crowds.

This is impossible for us to answer, as you have to be in the bush to see things, so we answer as long as you can!  A 7–10 day safari trip allows you to explore a couple of areas without rushing.

We personally recommend at least three nights at migration camp during key seasons to witness phenomena like river crossings or calving. Remember the great migration happens all year round.
