CONSERVATION
At Great Migration Camps, conservation is not just a commitment; it is the foundation of everything we do. We believe in thinking long-term and acting responsibly to ensure the Serengeti and its surrounding areas is protected for future generations and the survival of one of world’s great animal migrations.
Here’s how we make this a reality:
Our Commitment
OUR CONSERVATION PRINCIPLES
Protecting the Serengeti and Surrounding Ecosystems
We believe in the Tanzanian open-fenced environmental management system to ensure the continuation of the Great Migration. The integrity of the Serengeti is intrinsically linked to the surrounding protected areas, making the preservation of these spaces crucial. By maintaining and safeguarding the expansive ecosystems around the Serengeti, we can ensure the survival of this extraordinary natural phenomenon.
Wildlife corridors are crucial to species survival, especially at the end of dry season, when water resources are scarce. As wildlife moves through these areas, they encounter villagers & subsistence land use, often resulting in conflict. These protected areas are human-wildlife conflict zones that are crucial to the survival of the Serengeti, the Great Migration and way beyond the tourism zone.
Minimal Impact Practices
- Our camps use eco-friendly facilities, reducing waste and conserving water.
- We stay on designated roads in National Parks to avoid disturbing wildlife and their habitats.
- No off-road driving and no speeding within the park to respect the natural behaviour and personal space of the animals.
Ethical Guiding Practices
- Our guides prioritise animal welfare and avoid any actions that would disturb or harm the natural behaviour of the wild animal.
- We strictly do not support practices such as allowing cheetahs on vehicles or off-road driving that disrupts natural habitats.
- Our team is continuously updated on best practices in conservation ethics.
Sustainable Living
- Our low-impact camps boast a minimal carbon footprint, striving to be as close to carbon-neutral as possible.
- Energy: All camps are solar-powered, with some gas for cooking. No generators.
- Waste management: We minimize single-use plastics and separate waste for proper disposal. Glass is recycled, and organic waste is buried or burned.
- We employ and purchase locally, supporting seasonal and sustainable products.
Habitat Preservation
- We collaborate with conservation organizations to support habitat preservation initiatives.
- We engage in anti-poaching efforts and human-wildlife conflict mitigation in buffer zones.
- We work to retain habitats from the threats of farming, mining, and human encroachment.
Nature-Positive Travel
- We promote sustainable tourism by encouraging guests to consume less and experience more.
- Our safaris are designed to provide immersive experiences that connect guests with nature in a meaningful way.
- We explore less-visited areas, spreading tourism impact more evenly and helping to protect over-touristed sites.
Investment in People
We invest in training and development programs for our staff, ensuring high standards of service and ethical practice.
